Desperately Seeking Duende

Thu 18 Mar: 7pm, 9pm

Yasmine explores the flamenco dancer's eternal quest for duende (divine inspiration). In doing so, she strips away the polka-dots, ruffles and roses, to create a new future for Flamenco; accessing the duende through her family history, '80s arcade games, the Macarena, religious iconography and flamingos! This is modern Flamenco for a modern world.

Presented by:
Compañía Alma Flamenca

Best Dance weekly award winner (2019) returns with a visually decadent Flamenco production exploring the cycles of human interaction and the conversations that lead to true transformative power. Not a purely traditional Flamenco show, 'Las Cuatro' intertwines Flamenco with an eclectic soundtrack featuring contemporary world music, and original compositions by Byron Mark (Australia) and Paco Lara (Jerez, Spain).

★★★★★ "versatile, impactful, and eclectic" Weekend Notes.

"Energy flowing into the audience... fast feet... contortions of torso and arms communicate the swarthy passion of Spain's gitano tradition... rich, spicy and alluring" The Hook, New Zealand.

"their heel-tapping could move from a whisper to a storm... Watch out for their next production, and don't miss it" The Adelaide Review

**LIVE STREAMING** Tune in with the Livestream on the Marion Cultural Centre Facebook Page at 11am

Aloysius started playing guitar as a child, teaching himself by playing along to records before deciding to take the instrument seriously and commencing classical guitar studies at the Elder Conservatorium. A love of flamenco led him to spend time in Spain following the traditional apprenticeship of accompanying singers and dancers, studying with maestros and playing at Juergas (parties). Eventually he was able to work as an accompanist at the dance studios of Javier Cruz and Maria Angeles in Seville.

Since returning to Adelaide he has worked as an accompanist for many of Adelaide's flamenco performance companies, as well as giving frequent solo recitals. An intimate performance not to be missed.

Recuerdos by Studio Flamenco

Souvenirs gathered from a journey through Andalucia remind us of long days filled with languid guitar and nights of percussive rhythm. Flamenco musicians and dancers conjure memories of the Rio Guadalquivir, from the region of Cadiz to the gypsy quarter of Triana. “Highly entertaining, the artistry and technique of the musicians and dancers was inspiring. The evening had a wonderful dynamic range that kept me entranced right to the end. The footwork was amazing. I left the show thinking, “I want to do Flamenco now!” (Dance Informa magazine)
★★★★★ (Fresh FM and Adelaide Weekend Notes)

Workshops with Ana Otero: The Art of Flamenco

Ana is one of Australia’s most experienced and talented flamenco artists and is an incredibly warm and generous teacher. Students of all levels will benefit from Ana’s unique approach to body technique, rhythms through palmas (hand clapping) and castanets. She puts everyone at ease with her humour yet the depth of knowledge she shares in these workshops will leave you inspired and empowered on your flamenco journey.
Body Technique and Palmas Workshops
Ana will cover how to move with fluidity whilst still accentuating movements, allowing tension and release at the appropriate moments according to the style of music. She will also focus on the carriage necessary to dance with elegance particularly in marking in flamenco.

The palmas will be focusing on the combinations used in a particular area of dance (i.e the “Llamada”(call) “escobilla” (footwork) “letra" (verse) and accompaniment to music.

Castanet Workshops
In the castanets workshops we will be working on drills and combinations to strengthen your fingers for clear and strong technique. Ana will incorporate castanets with “braceo" (arm movements) and some turns.

There will also be a focus on how to use the castanets as we would footwork working on the light and shade and accentuation when needed.
