How to watch the best flamenco live this September even though you're stuck at home

It’s time for the 2020 Flamenco Bienal and this year there’s an opportunity for us all to watch some of today’s top flamenco artists performing live from the festival in Seville.

No matter where you are, in light of the current travel restrictions, the Bienal will stream seven performances live to accommodate international festival-goers who are not able to attend in person. The performances, which take place in different venues of historic interest across Seville, will be streamed live and screened again at a deferred time on the festival’s YouTube channel at https://www.youtube.com/user/labienal.

The inauguration of the festival and the online streaming will be marked with a flashmob from Seville’s historic Real Alcázar, where artists Antonio Canales and María Moreno will interpret Sevillanas with renowned guitarist Rafael Riqueni.

On 6 September the festival will premiere two shows from Rocío Molina as part of a trilogy series, Trilogía sobre la Guitarra. The first performance, Inicio (Uno), will be accompanied by maestro Rafael Riqueni. Later the same day Molina will perform the second piece of the trilogy, Al Fondo Riela (Lo otro de uno), with guitarists Eduardo Trasierra and Yerai Cortés.

Viola de Gamba player, Fahmi Alqhai and dancer Patricia Guerrero come together on September 16 to reinterpret Baroque era music in a Baroque setting - the Church of San Luis de los Franceses.

The online program also highlights musical talents with shows from pianist Andrés Barrios and guitarist Joselito Acedo performing live from the Real Alcázar on 24 and 26 September respectively.

Young flamenco singer La Tremendita will premiere her work Tremenda on 29 September, combining the traditional and experimental. The show also features guest artists Rancapino Chico and Andrés Marín.

Pianist Dorantes will premiere his piece Identidad on September 30.

The final broadcast in the online program on 3 October will see Andrés Marín perform a compilation of pieces recorded throughout the day in Seville’s historic Monastery of La Cartuja.

While the live streaming presents a never-before-seen chance to witness the Bienal online and for free, Australian-based viewers will be aware of the need to convert the schedule to local time. For example 9pm in Seville is 5am the following day in Eastern states, 4:30am the following day in South Australia, and 3am the following day in Western Australia. Viewers should also be aware that daylight savings starts in some areas of Australia on 4 October 2020, which will impact some of the broadcasts.
